H1N1 and Flu Information for Parents
We are aware that this may be a difficult year to be away from your son or daughter, the RU student. RU continues to monitor the novel H1N1 virus activity with the local and state health departments and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website. Please encourage your son/daughter to review the links found on this RU Student Health (RUSH) website, especially HELP PREVENT THE FLU. Frequent handwashing is important in the prevention of this or any virus. Vaccines, both seasonal and novel H1N1, are recommended as they become available. The seasonal flu vaccine should be available early October. Discuss these vaccines with your student in advance so they are prepared to obtain the vaccines when they become available. There will be minimum charges for the administration of each vaccine. There will be campus notices when the vaccines are available. RU will follow CDC recommendations for the H1N1 virus. Symptoms are fever and cough. More information can be found on this website at the link CDC Symptoms of H1N1 Flu. Antivirals are recommended for high risk students only. Treatment recommendations for students without chronic illness include Tylenol for fever or Ibuprofen for fever and body aches. More information may be found on this website link FEELING SICK? Self-Isolation is recommended by CDC for those who suspect they have either the seasonal flu or H1N1 virus. Additional information can be found at the RUSH link FEELING SICK? or www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/institutions/guidance/ Questions may be answered by calling the Virginia Department of Health hotline 1-877-ASKVDH3 (1-877-275-8343). RUSH also has a nurse hotline 1-866-205-2164.
